Community Based Organization: Yu-Ai Kai

Located in San Jose’s Japantown, Yu-Ai Kai has been serving seniors for 40 years. This nonprofit organization strives to promote healthy aging, successful independent living, and advocates for all seniors.

Programs at Yu-Ai Kai include Senior Day Services, Caregiver Support Groups, Case Management, Neighborhood Meals on Wheels, and Japanese-themed activities including crafts, language, computer, and music classes.

Yu-Ai Kai empowers seniors to stay healthy and active by offering exercise classes, trips, educational classes, and healthy ethnic (Asian) meals served daily at noon. Wellness activities and exercise classes are offered before and after lunch, based upon the Healthy Aging Initiative.

The Nutrition Program offers hot meals and a place to socialize. The Yu-Ai Kai van picks up seniors from their homes to attend the meal (an important accommodation for those who cannot drive). With the Home Delivered Meals Program, meals are delivered to seniors who qualify.

Additionally, Yu-Ai Kai offers a Japanese book library, Ishizue (volunteer language assistance), and provides bilingual and bicultural services to those who participate in the Social Services Program. This program assists seniors with Social Security and health insurance questions and also provides referrals for board and care, legal assistance, and more.

Sourcewise has proudly provided funding for Yu-Ai Kai since 1985.
