Staying Healthy While Aging

As we age, many of us are concerned with our health and wellbeing. Fortunately, resources and programs do exist within Santa Clara County to help everyone live as long and healthy as possible. Studies show staying healthy depends on a number of different factors, specifically for vital mental and physical stability.

Here are some common strategies to support a healthy lifestyle:

1. Exercise at least three times a week.

2. Stimulate your brain with things like crossword puzzles or Sudoku.

3. Make sure you eat balanced meals.

4. Get plenty of sleep.

5. Socialize with friends and family.

6. See your doctor for regular and routine checkups.

Staying active not only helps with how we feel mentally but it can also aid in preventing serious diseases, such as heart diseases, and controlling things like arthritis and diabetes. It can be difficult to join a gym or many do not know how to safely exercise. There are programs that focus on helping seniors stay active. You may already have access to these programs if you are enrolled in a Medicare health plan.

These health programs allow you to be a member of a health program designed specifically for older adults and may be available at no additional cost aside from your normal monthly insurance premium. As a member of one of these health programs, you may have access to exercises programs at local gyms, as well as health education and social events throughout Santa Clara County.

If you are interested in learning more about these health programs or other resources to stay healthy while aging, please call Council on Aging Silicon Valley at (408) 350-3200, option 1.
